3 General Types Of Beer

035 Types of beerOne of the most popular liquor in the world is beer. Who does not know beer? Almost everyone knows it if not all. It is a common beverage in gatherings and celebrations. The beer has also been known to have numerous positive effects on our health when drank in moderation. It has adverse effects though if taken in large amounts for a long period of time and may eventually cause cancer or worse, death. This beverage is made from various ingredients such as water, hops, barley and different kinds of flavorings. The mixture then undergoes a process called fermentation which is done with the help of yeast. There are currently thousands of beers available in the market but there are only three general types of beer. Here are the three types of beer usually differentiated with each other by the way they are fermented and the temperature used in the process.

1. Ales

Ales undergo the process of top fermentation wherein the yeast, for the first few days, floats in the surface before finally settling down in the bottom. They are also stored using higher temperatures than lagers, usually within the range of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of beer is a popular choice among British islands. Different kinds of ales encompass a variety of flavors and colors. Most though are sweet and tasty and are of a brown color. One popular kind of ale is the stout which is made from dark-roasted barley with no malt and can be purchased in milk, chocolate, oatmeal and other flavors. Other kinds are bitter, pale ale, amber ale, porter, wheat, etc.

2. Lagers

Lagers, on the other hand, undergo bottom fermentation wherein the yeast settles immediately to the base without floating to the surface. Unlike with ales, they are kept in lower temperatures usually ranging from 46 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit and this storing process last for weeks or months. The name of this beer was derived from the German word ‘lagern’ which means store. Lagers normally have lighter colors and flavors which are smoother and more filtered than those of ales. A well-known kind of lager is dunkel which has a darker color than most and has a hint of chocolate and coffee flavors. Other kinds are bock, Marzen, pilsner and many more.

3. Lambic

The Lambic is the least known of the types of beer. It is different from the other two types in the sense that it uses wild yeast and bacteria during the fermentation process which is done spontaneously. It is a common beverage in certain parts of Belgium. Gueuze, Mars, faro, fruit, and kriek are the common kinds of Lambic beer.

These are the types of beer that can are commonly found in the market. It depends on our individual taste and preferences which do we think is the best among the three.

Discovery of Soda Pop

Next to mineral water, soda is arguably one of the most popular drinks people all over the world consume for hundreds of years – even dating back as the 1800s. Statistics show that people in the US drink an average of 597 cans of soda pops in a year. The rise of this famous drink started with the grand belief of people about “effervescent waters” and their supposed healing effects. The history of soda comes a long way from its discovery two centuries ago.  The fad of this particular kind of drink led to scientists’ discovery of carbon dioxide present in the bubbles of these natural mineral waters.

099 History of sodaHistorians posit that it was during in the latter part of the 18th century when the first man-made carbonated water was invented. It was Dr. Joseph Priestly who taught of a systematic method on how to infuse carbon dioxide with water in 1767. On the other hand, a chemistry professor named Torbern Bergman also devised an Apparatus that allow the use of sulfuric acid to the creation of carbonated drinks.

Despite these breakthroughs in the manufacturing of carbonated drinks, it was only in 1832 when soda reached popularity in the US Market. A man named John Matthews managed to invent an apparatus that can be used by soda fountain owners to mass produce the said beverages.  American pharmacists were tasked to explore and experiment about possible medicinal herbs which can be added to carbonated drinks. They have mixed dandelion, birch barks and other flavors extracted from fruits to these products. Consumers, in effect, liked the variety and variability of these soda pops and the industry of soft drinks grew and flourished.

More than 1,500 US patents were filed for caps, and corks that will be able to keep carbon dioxide or bubbles from going out of the bottle. In 1893, a Baltimore machine shop operator, William Painter, was able to patent the very first successful way of preventing the escape of the bubbles from the bottle. It is called the “Crown Cork Bottle Seal.”

Another major advancement was made in 1899 when a glass-blowing machine was patented to produce bottle containers for the soda pops. Michael Owens, a worker of Libby Glass Company, was the first one to use the glass-forming technique using the machine.  Within a couple of years, the production of these glass bottles increased from 1,500 to 57,000 bottles per day.

The next thing people were looking for during that time is the way on how to package and carry these soft-drinks. During the 1920S, six-pack soft drinks carrying cardboard made cartons called “Hom-Paks” were created. Vending machines were also invented that time. The advent of soda pop continues until today.  The magazine Beverage Digest reported that the US market demand for carbonated drinks reached up 10.16 billion cases in 2006.

So how did this even start? How did this kind of drink come into being? Here is a brief history of beer.

This beverage is the first alcoholic drink made by humans. Although its specific origins are unknown, it was said that it was first made by people in the farming era. The first ingredients which people made beer from were grain and water. They were very much in love with beer that it somehow served as a factor to stop living a nomadic life. Basically speaking, one factor that made them pursue agriculture was because of beer. In fact, they already knew how to make beer before making bread. For every culture, different ingredients for beer were used and they had their own mixes. For example, in the African region, crops such as maize and cassava were used to make beer. In Asia, the Chinese people had wheat as a major ingredient. In Japan, they had rice beer which is one of the most famous beverages today. Lastly, Egyptians used barley as their ingredients for beer. Beer was not only a beverage in the lives of the ancient people but it was also part of their traditions and practices. For example, in the Babylonian civilization, it was said that beer or mead was provided for the groom by the bride’s father. The groom would receive beer from the father-in-law a month after the wedding and he could drink as much as he can. In their culture, the month after the wedding was called the honey month so that is why they would give the groom mead or honey beer.

Indeed, beer has been a part of the lives of many people regardless of their era. Even in the ancient times, we can see that it has been part of their culture and until now, we can still see many people making beer as part of their traditions. So if you try to think that beer is just a drink, it is not, but it is a part of history.

The term “beer gut” is quite ingrained into our society, so much so that many people think that all beer is unhealthy and that abstaining from drinking will result in a better lifestyle.  To some degree this is true since, just as with many other diet choices, too much of any one thing will be harmful.  Choosing certain beer and diet plans, however, as a moderate indulgence do no harm and can be beneficial to losing or maintaining body weight. If weight management is where you struggle try Green Coffee Bean Extract to try and boost your metabolism and help shed the unwanted beer gut.

Since beer is brewed from cereal grains (wheat, rice, and barley), it contains the same nutrition that you would find from breads and pastas made with the same material.  The calorie content of most beers is fairly high, coming in at between two and four hundred calories per serving.  This means that a single bottle can be the equivalent of eating an entire baked potato.  Substitute carbohydrates in your meal for a beer if you want a balanced diet, by holding off on starchy meal additions in favor of a cold one.  Light beers are marketed as having fewer calories, so those watching their intake can switch to light beer to enjoy more than one or two drinks.  This beer, however, is made from simple carbs, meaning that it negates the health advantages that richer beers offer with complex carbohydrates.

Beer has some advantages towards healthy lifestyles.  Since the alcohol within beer is the most compact form of energy that humans can metabolize, it provides (nearly instantly) enough energy to perform physical activities.  This energy is counteracted by the actual weight of the beer itself as well as the other effects of alcohol in your system.  This means that you should never drink a beer before working out, but in the cool down after a workout it can help get the necessary energy to your muscles faster for better regeneration.
